Let your body do the talking

Shaking is a primal impulse which offers a playful way to release stress and shift energy.

 

In the words of Taylor Swift "Baby, I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake, ⁣I shake it off, I shake it off" 🎵 💃

 

Animals in the wild have an innate ability to release stress by shaking and other methods, whereas humans can get stuck in their minds. Everyday stresses can cause a fight or flight response in the body, even though we aren't be chased by a saber-tooth tiger. Our bodies hold onto experiences that haven't been processed, which can impact our physical and emotional wellbeing.

 

For me, sometimes verbal words are just not enough. Moving in this way and getting loud with my exhales helps me to process through experiences and everyday stresses. This is why I incorporate this type of movement into the Fawe Movement workshops.

LET'S SHAKE IT OFF TOGETHER

 

1. Stand tall and proud, with your feet shoulder width distant apart.


2. Soften your knees, root down through the balls of your feet and start tapping your alternate heels on the floor. Let your heels become a percussion instrument.


3. Allow your whole body to become loose and bob up and down. Think of your joints and tissues softening. Feel your muscles freely shaking and wobbling.

 

4. Relax your jaw. Deeply inhale through your nose and exhale out through your mouth. Maybe adding a sighing noise to the exhale or welcoming a roar to be released.


5. Let the vibrations shake away tensions. Use this as a cathartic practice to shake off whatever you need to that day, to bringing yourself back to a much more parasympathetic state. Release those thoughts and stresses that you do not want to hold on to.  

 

6. After a minute or so, come to stillness with your eyes closed, standing tall with one hand on your heart centre and the other resting on your belly. Take a few soft and deep inhales and exhales through your nose. Invite a word of affirmation - whatever you feel you need to hear today - repeat a few times. When you are ready open your eyes.
